Time: June 2006. Location: Camargue, France. The Camargue is a spectacular natuaral area in the south of France and home to more than 400 species of birds, the brine ponds providing one of the few European habitats for the greater flamingo. The marshes are also a prime habitat for many species of insects, notably (and notoriously) some of the most ferocious mosquitos to be found anywhere in France. Fortunately we didn't struggle with any of these mosquitos! In 2006 the Camargue suffered from a very dry summer which also meant that many of ponds where the flamingos would normally feed were dried up. This image shows one such pond.
